Postcards & Postscripts

Postcards & Postscripts is a semi-autobiographical writing and painting publication based on my experiences of growing up in the 1950s and 60s. Spanning these two decades, the publication presents one story and one painting per year (1950 – 1969). To varying degrees, they mix my personal experiences with memories of key public events for each year.

Reflecting today on what it was like to grow-up in those formative post-war years, the publication offers a variety of ‘then’ and ‘now’ musings on how society has changed.

My experience in producing this book, with the support of my editor Larry Navon, then set me on a pathway for further historically specific investigations – both in painting and through writing. This process shoe-horned me into investigating the 1960s French Narrative Figuration movement referred to earlier in the HOME page and developed in the section WORK IN PROGRESS below.

Orange book cover titled "Postcards & Postscripts: Growing up in the 1950s and 60s" by Adrian Chappell.
