Bankside’s Past in the Present
The 32 prints were first shown in an exhibition called Bankside’s Past in the Present at the OXO Gallery on London’s South Bank. The work represents the changes that have taken place in the immediate neighbourhood surrounding Tate Modern. Since the late 18th century until the 1980s, Bankside was a hive of industrial and manufacturing industries. In specific areas – in gas lighting and the development of electricity – it was at the forefront of Britain’s industrial revolution.
The images overlay contemporary scenes with historical incidents, events and local characters stretching back over 200 years. The map below depicts a self-guided walk which can be followed on your mobile phone.
